For best quality projection of images it is wise to adjust the file so that its resolution matches the native resolution of the projector. Unfortunately with the rapid developments in this field there are now several different resolutions found on projectors. The following is a guide to those usually met.

XGA 1024 x 768 This is the commonest resolution at the moment and is that used by our own club projector.

SXGA+ 1400 x 1050 This higher resolution is relatively uncommon but is used by some clubs’ projectors (and the PAGB).

1080p 1920 x 1080 This is the same as the full high definition of televisions and is a 16:9 format (as against the 4:3 of those above). The Yorkshire Photographic Union has a projector with this native resolution and therefore their competitions are for this largest image size.

If you wish to put a border on a picture then you should make this part of the maximum pixel size for the projector.

You can make images different shapes if you wish but should take the projector resolution as the maximum size in either direction. The image will then be projected with a black background up to the full image size. If this does not suit your image then you can always provide a coloured background up to the full size of the projected image.
